Scandinavian

The revolution in the design industry had travelled really far from gothic or Victorian styles to modern and complementary styles. In this new era, the parameters of design have shifted from heavy textures, bold dark colours, and stately environment to simple, aesthetic, light interiors.

Scandinavian modern furniture is the design that evolved during the 1950‘s within a group of countries in northern Europe, namely Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. The concept of this design is to make daily life simpler by adopting the principle of minimalism and functionality. We are talking about open floor plans, light texture with abstract walls, an organized clutter free space with clear straight lines, emphasized with spare precise furniture and warm wood furnishings.

To design a house in the Scandinavian way, there are a few things one should consider:

The house needs to be less chaotic and more homely and modest, so throw away all the unnecessary furniture and accessories to declutter the house and breathe in the spacious array of lifestyle that comes with it.

The most important thing about the Scandinavian design is the colours. Choose soft light colours that reflect natural light, but to be more specific and true to the design use white with a stark combination of black. This colour palette can be further accentuated by adding furniture and accessories of any shade of grey or light pastels and hues.

The floor is basically made of warm wood tones in most of the Scandinavian designed houses, but if not wood, then the floor colour should match the wall colours to make it look more spacious.

After deciding the colour palettes, place the minimal furniture in a way that makes the area more airy and comfortable. The furniture should have subtle curves with no clutter or ornate decoration and carvings. The Scandinavian style bed is preferred to be made of wood, teak, oak or sombre copper.

Complete the finishing of the house by adding a few details like some plants or cactus to make it more domestic.  Display your wardrobe openly as the focal point of art in your room. Make your house tech-free with least devices around you and use paper lanterns or Asian inspired light fixture.

Remember, the Scandinavian approach to life and design is lagom which means the perfect balance. So, chase after this principle for designing your house as well as life.
